Virgil B Bjorklund was born on June 27, 1933 to Oscar Benjamin and Edith Victoria (Christopherson) Bjorklund in Grantsburg, WI. He died peacefully on December 15, 2021 at 88 years old.
He attended a one room schoolhouse until 8th grade (Karlsborg School) and graduated Grantsburg High School in 1951. He was a very hard worker on the family farm, with many skills and always knew how to keep everything functional and operating.
He had to wait until his 18th birthday to work on the Great Lake Ore Boats and did demonstrations on ropes and knots for the cub scouts when the boys were little.
Virgil enjoyed his logging, sawmill, gardening, farming, his cattle, hunting, fishing, building and was a gifted carpenter who worked on many prominent buildings in MN and the Twin Cities. He was a 63+ year member of various locals of the Twin City Carpenters Union.
Virgil joined the US Army and served March 1954-1956. He deployed to Enewetak Atoll Island near the equator in the era known as “The Atomic Soldiers”. They told them not to eat the coconuts or fish.
Virgil was a wonderful husband, travel companion, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and brother. He loved visiting with special friends at the kitchen table over coffee and cookies, was a great story teller, could recall facts in great detail and loved to tease and joke.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; Oscar and Edith (Christopherson) Bjorklund, siblings; Mildred (Donald) McNally, Maurice (Laura) Bjorklund, Florence (Elmer) Swenson, infant sister Elaine, Larry Bjorklund, and brother in law; Joe Hoffman.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63.5 years Elaine; children: Bryan (Patty), Bruce (Judy), Brad and Christine (Dave); grandchildren; Danielle, Erin, Nick, Brent, Kelly, Jenna, six great-grandchildren; sister; Phyllis Hoffman (Joe), In-laws; Joan Bjorklund (Larry), Mick (Charlotte) Burrington, Larry (Linda) Baker as well as many nieces, nephews and amazing friends whom he loved dearly and loved to spend time with!
A private family service will be held. A public visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 from 4:00-7:00 PM at Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home, Grantsburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church in Falun, WI or Grantsburg American Legion Post 185.
