Nettie Frances Otis was born on January 21, 1944 at the Green Gable Maternity Home in Washburn County to the parents of Christian Frederick and Lulu Viola (Johnson) Mangelsen. Nettie grew up on a farm by Shell Lake, Wisconsin. She was the oldest of 6 children. She attended the Doran School for 2 years, the McCarty School for 2 years, and the Bashaw School for 2 years. In the 7th grade, she went to Shell Lake and graduated in 1962. On August 24, 1963 she was united in marriage to Duane Otis. To this union there were born 5 children. Susan in 1964, John in 1965, Ken in 1970, Laura in 1972, and Judy in 1973. She worked at the Cranberry Marsh near Hertel, WI. Then she worked at the John Thomas turkey farm. In 1987 she received her CNA license and went to work at Capeside Cove Good Samaritan Center in Siren, WI for 10 years. She then went to work at Terraceview Living Center in Shell Lake, WI. In 2006, she retired. After she retired she enjoyed her many grandchildren. She was involved with 4-H for many years. She also enjoyed sewing, pottery, scrapbooking, and many other crafts. Nettie is survived by her husband, Duane; children, Susan (Brad) Fougner of Amery, John Otis of Shell Lake, Ken (Tyann) Otis of Webster, Laura (Dennis) Formanek of Falun, and Judi (Jim) Menke of Frederic; 3 granddaughters, 7 grandsons, 1 step granddaughter, 2 step grandsons, 1 sister, 2 brothers, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Chris and Lulu Mangelsen and sisters, Gloria and Alice. A visitation was held on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home - Siren Chapel. Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Siren Chapel. Pastor Diane Blahauvietz officiated. Music was provided by organist, Fran McBroom and soloist, Barb Friese. Interment followed at Lakeview Cemetery in LaFollette Township. Pallbearers were Jim Otis, Bobby Mangelsen, Warren Henke, Lee Mangelsen, Pete Mangelsen, and Hank Mangelsen.
