Louis Charles Hjort, age 74, a resident of Grantsburg, passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2019. Louis was born on May 7, 1945 in Grantsburg to Erwin and Vivian (Lund) Hjort. Louis was raised in Grantsburg, graduating from Grantsburg High School in 1963. He attended UW-River Falls, graduation with a BA Degree in Math and Education and master’s in Social Sciences. He then student taught at Janesville Parker High School in Janesville, Wisconsin. Louis then met his wife, Kristie Brewer, on a blind date in 1969, they married on February 21, 1970. On January 9, 1970 Louis joined the United States Army, left for Vietnam 2 weeks after the birth of his daughter, Koreen Louise. He came home with a Bronze Star, Vietnam service medal, Vietnam Campaign medal, 2 oversees bars, Defense Service medal, Sharpshooter Badge and Joint Services Commendation medal. He then served at the AFES Induction Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He really enjoyed this job, meeting these fine young men and women willing to serve our country. Louis then worked at Minnesota Fabrics for 20 years as manager/district manager. Louis and Kristie then knew it was time to come home to Grantsburg and care for his parents until their death. Louis enjoyed working on the Big Wood Lake Association for 21 years, mowing his neighbors lawns, helping his neighbors and friends, being custodian with his wife, Kristie at Faith Lutheran Church, listening to music on the deck while reading a good book, avid woodworker and even enjoyed repairing the soles of shoes taught by his father. He was always up to watching his favorite teams: Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Bucks, and the Milwaukee Brewers. Louis had that quick wit and humor ready whenever needed. But most of all he enjoyed being a Dad to Koreen and Grandpa to his grandsons, Jon, Raymond, Jacob and Samuel. Loved watching them enjoy the lake, whether it was catching fish and frogs, or helping light the flares and watching fireworks on the 4 th of July. Louis was preceded in death by his parents, Erwin and Vivian Hjort. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Kristie; daughter, Koreen; grandsons, Jon, Raymond, Jacob, and Samuel; mother and father-in-law, Millie and George Brewer; brother-in-law, Craig (Jew) Brewer; nieces, Charlotte (John) Johnston, Cindy (Matt) Perry; many cousins, other relatives and friends. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 2:00 PM (visitation 1-2 PM) at Faith Lutheran Church in Grantsburg with Military Honors. Memorials are preferred to Grantsburg Public Library, Faith Lutheran Church Youth Ministry, and the Burnett Medical Center Foundation Board.
