Leona Brekke

Leona Brekke passed away peacefully on Friday, December 24, 2021, at the age of 104, in Centuria Wisconsin.

Following is the obituary that she had written herself.

I was born on July 11, 1917, to Christine and James Fish and was raised in Grantsburg, WI.

In 1938, I married my first husband Sidney Lund and had three children; Sidney (Marge) Lund, Lois Andree and David (Maria) Lund before he passed away.

In 1951, I moved to Cudahy, WI and married for the second time to Andrew Brekke. That marriage gained me four stepchildren, Rodie (Jeannie/Karla) Brekke, Bob (Shirley) Brekke, Ron (Carol) Brekke, Genny Brekke and had one child, Andy Brekke, together with my second husband, for a total of eight children.

After my second husband passed away, I moved back to Cushing, WI, where I owned and ran a grocery store and gas station. I was active in the church and taught Sunday school and Confirmation classes.

I’ve always had the love of sports and in my younger years played softball and later bowled, pitched horseshoes, golfed and shot pool. I am a devoted Green Bay Packer Fan to the very end. Go Pack!

I have six brothers, Byron (Grace) Fish, Warren (Ardelle) Fish, Virgil (Clara) Fish, Clayton Fish, James (Juanita) Fish, Gary (Karen/Penny/Wanda) Fish and one sister Beverly (Ken) Hanson. I now have many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

In my final years I moved into Sophie’s Manor in Centuria, WI where I felt like I was home. I looked forward to taking car rides with my daughter around the country side. Loved friends and family visiting me, getting cards and cookies from the Women of First Lutheran Church of Cushing and I enjoyed seeing the local ministers when they’d come to visit. I want to recognize and thank the owners of Sophie’s Manor and the staff for the wonderful care I received. They were friendly, helpful, and attended to my personal care with dignity.

Leona is preceded in death by her husbands, Sidney Lund and Andrew Brekke; son, Andy Brekke; stepchildren, Rodie Brekke, Bob Brekke, and Ron Brekke; and brothers, Byron Fish, Warren Fish, Virgil Fish, Clayton Fish, and James Fish.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 19, 2022 at 2:00 PM (visitation 1-2 PM) at Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home, Grantsburg. A private burial will be held at Riverside Cemetery.
