Katrina “Bean” Gail Matrious-Staples, age 26, passed away unexpectedly on October 4, 2023. She was born to Deborah Matrious and Ward Staples on July 9, 1997 in Shell Lake, WI. She grew up on the Danbury reservation.
She attended Webster school where she graduated in 2015. She played softball and basketball during her middle/high school years. She was known as that student who would make anyone laugh. Everyone who hung out with her always had a smile on their face. She would light up the classroom with her humor.
She worked at St. Croix Casino Danbury for many years. She started in 2012 working in the kitchen doing various things like dishwasher, prep cook, and line cook. She transferred into the smoke shop for a few years. Finally, she transferred into the beverage department where she worked as a bartender (the job she enjoyed the most). Her outgoing personality made her a favorite for all the regulars at the casino. She developed many friendships during her time bartending.
Katrina “Bean” had a heart of gold. She was raised as an only child, but you’d never guess because she was always surrounded by family. She adored her fur babies; her dogs Benjah and Peanut, and her cat Paws. Benjah had a way of finding trouble for himself often but so did Trina. They were two peas in a pod! Benjah has the privilege of accompanying Katrina on her journey. A poetic and beautiful thing for them to make their travels together.
Katrina was the one you could always count on. She’d be there for anyone who needed it. And this girl was ALWAYS down for an adventure. She kept a “spennanight” bag on hand for this reason.
Her truest love is Anna Matrious. Anna was her absolute favorite person.
Katrina is preceded in death by her grandmothers, Nancy Matrious and Delores Staples; Uncle, Matthew Matrious
She will be forever missed by her sisters, Anna Matrious and Hailey Staples; mother, Deborah Matrious; father, Ward Staples; and many other relatives and friends.
Friends may call on Saturday, October 7, 2023 after 7:00 PM at Danbury Tribal Hall in Danbury. Funeral service will be held on Sunday, October 8, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Danbury Tribal Hall in Danbury with Spiritual Leader Lee Staples. Interment will follow at Danbury Cemetery.
