Jonathan D. “Jon” Hicks, age 77, of Siren and Frederic, retired Polk County Deputy Sheriff, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2014, surrounded by his family. Jon was born October 9, 1936 in Minneapolis, Minnesota; he married Kathryn C. “Kathy” Kulbeck on March 6, 1965. He had resided in Minneapolis and New York Mills, MN, and Balsam Lake, Frederic, and Siren, WI. As a young adult he was employed as a fuel truck driver for Indianhead Trucking Co, and served as a Minneapolis Police Reserve Officer (Civil Defense). He then served as a Police Officer for the village of Savage, MN. A few years later, he accepted the position of Police Chief for New York Mills, MN. In 1967, Jon was hired by the Polk County Sheriff’s Department, where he served as Traffic Police, Deputy Sheriff, and Investigator, retiring in 1987 after a work related accident in January 1985. Jon was a member of the Tri-County Law Enforcement Association, and the National Sheriffs Association. He was a member of the Wisconsin Sheriffs and Deputy Sheriffs Association (WSDSA), and served as Director, Vice-president and President. Jon was a member of the Frederic Fire Department and was also an ambulance attendant during the 1970s. He was the Chief Deputy Coroner for Polk County in the early 1980s. Jon loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them and attending family events. Surviving are a daughter, Debbie (Jim) England; 5 sons: Dick (Linae) Hicks, Don (Pam) Hicks, Jim Hicks, Kelly (sig. other, Kim) Hicks, and Kris (Katie) Hicks; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Jo (Jim) Stevensen; and many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Ruth Hicks; a son, John D. Hicks; and his wife, Kathy, who passed away September 6, 2006. A Celebration of the Life of Jonathan D. “Jon” Hicks will be held on Friday, June 20, 2014, from 2:00pm until 6:00pm at Hackers Lanes & Banquet Facilities, 413 Wisconsin Ave S., Frederic, WI. There will be times to share memories at 2:30pm and 5:30pm, as well as throughout the afternoon. Private urn burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Siren.
