Gordon W. Larson, age 74 passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2023 at Essentia Hospital in Duluth, MN.
Gordon was born on December 3, 1948, in Grantsburg, WI to Clarence and Mable Larson. Following graduation from Grantsburg High School in 1966, Gordon served in the Army as a Radio Teletype Operator. During some of this enlistment, he was stationed overseas and returned home as an SP4.
Upon returning home he worked for the Village for a brief time and then took over, after his father’s retirement, as caretaker of Riverside Cemetery here in Grantsburg, where Gordon remained until his retirement in 2012. After his retirement the new caretaker said he would drive through daily, and if it was later in the evening Gordon would comment, “just making sure everyone is back for the night.” Gordan’s wit and sincere care for his job and the residents there showed the pride he took in being caretaker.
Gordon enjoyed sharing coffee each morning with his group of friends in town, taking walks, and making people laugh. Gordon was known for volunteering his time in assisting people in researching family history, community historical research for local publications, and lending aide to the historical society at the Henry Peterson Room in the Grantsburg Public Library. Both his knowledge and his laugh will be greatly missed by friends and acquaintances alike.
He is preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Mable Larson; and sister Margaret.
Gordon is survived by his sister, Dorothy Hoefs; his niece Kelly (Jason Degolier); great-niece Ashley, great-nephew Isaiah, and cousin Jeanne (Gary L. Marek) along with many friends.
A memorial gathering will be held on November 27, 2023 from 2:00-4:00, with Honor Guard at 4:00 at Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home, Grantsburg.
