Gladys M. Benson, age 85, a lifelong resident of the Frederic area died September 18, 2013 at the Frederic Care Center. Gladys was born in the Town of West Sweden on August 27, 1928 to George and Josephine Brethorst. Gladys married Arnold on June 14, 1947 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Frederic. She and her husband had a farm where they enjoyed many years together. In addition to the farm work, Gladys enjoyed spending time tending to the flower beds and vegetable gardens. When she wasn’t gardening, she was in the kitchen canning her vegetables for the winter or baking breads, brownies, and cookies for her family and friends. In her free time, Gladys liked to travel around the United States, especially to polka festivals with Arnold and their friends. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and often had them overnight for a night of playing their favorite games. She also went to their sporting events. When she wasn’t busy with her family, Gladys spent time with her friends and sisters playing cards and dice, and going to the casino. Gladys was a member of the Good Cheer Club, and in the church choir, and was a Town Treasurer for West Sweden. She was preceded in death by her husband Arnold; son Lyle; grandsons Matt McClintock and Brandon Taylor; her parents; siblings Emil, Bill, Jerry, Chuck, Frank, Vi, Bud and Georgia.
