Duane Lockert

December 10, 1928 — September 1, 2013

Duane (Bud) Lockert, age 84, a resident of Grantsburg died September 1, 2013. Duane was born on December 10, 1928 in Anderson Township to Palmer and Elsie Lockert, the 2nd of 5 children. He graduated in 1946 from Grantsburg high school, where he participated in football, basketball, and baseball. During the summer between his junior and senior year, he and a buddy hopped a box car to South Dakota looking for work. After inquiring at the local barber shop they found employment with local farmers. After graduating from Grantsburg in 1946, Duane cut pulp wood for his father, was a butter maker at the Grantsburg creamery, and ran a milk route. He then enlisted and served as a Sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War, spending three months on the front lines. He was honorably discharged in 1960. In 1954 he married Julie Konvalin and to this union two children were born. Anthony (Tony) Duane and Rosemarie (Rose) Julie. The family lived in New Brighton, MN where Duane was employed at Astrotech until they purchased Stub's Texaco and moved to Frederic. He also worked as a machinist for McNally’s for a number of years and as a mechanic at Lockert’s Shell. In his free time he enjoyed bowling, playing cards, hunting, fishing, gardening, watching the Packers and playing golf. He loved spending time with his family, but his pride and joy were his grandchildren. He was always willing to babysit and loved dying, decorating, and hiding eggs for his grandchildren to find on Easter morning. When he became a great grandpa he was referred to as the baby hog, because he wanted to hold them and the rest of us just had to wait our turn. In their later years, Duane and Julie moved to Siren to be close to their daughter. After the loss of his wife, Duane moved back to his family homestead in Lindspur, just southwest of Grantsburg. When his health began to fail he again moved to Siren, and wound up spending his last few months being lovingly cared for at the Continuing Care Center in Grantsburg, WI. He was preceded in death by his wife Julie; son Anthony; his parents; sisters Mermie Ormston, Muriel Logeland, and Mavis Mettling; his sisters in law Marcella Bogue and Norma Carlson; brothers in law Jack Ormston, Edwin Ruhn, Alton Carlson, and Rodney Hanson; nephews Joe Mettling, Larry Ruhn and Russell Ruhn; and his niece Judy Coplan. Duane is survived by his daughter Rosemarie (Scott) Wondra; grandchildren Chandra (Dave) Haider, Jamie (Jake) Geisler, Mandi Wondra and Troy (Whitney) Lockert; 9 great grandchildren; sisters Betty Hanson; sister in law Liz Ruhn, and brother in law Paul Mettling; along with many other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 6, 2013 at 2:00 PM (visitation 1-2 PM) at Swedberg-Taylor Family Funeral Home, Grantsburg Chapel. Arrangements were entrusted to Swedberg-Taylor Family Funeral Home. Online condolences can be made at www.swedberg-taylor.com
