Dorothy Dahlberg

April 3, 1927 — August 23, 2014

Dorothy Lucille Dahlberg, age 87, of Grantsburg, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 23rd, 2014. Dorothy was born April 3, 1927 south of Grantsburg, in the town of Sunrise. She lived in Grantsburg all her adult life and was one of the community’s most cherished, ebullient, and active members (not to mention one of its star golfers!). Dorothy enjoyed life to the fullest at the side of Albert (“Bud”) Nathan Dahlberg, with whom she had just celebrated 67 years of marriage on August 4th. Dorothy’s life has always been marked by very close, loving, and involved relationships with her family members. As a child, and with her many imaginative siblings, she enjoyed the outdoors, including climbing trees, picking wildflowers, and exploring the wilderness. Her family was close and loving; they worked hard and they played hard. Dorothy loved animals and had lots of pets of all varieties. Dorothy has always had a seemingly endless supply of energy, and, in fact, one of her childhood nicknames was “Speed”! She honed other crafts, such as embroidery and cooking, under the tutelage of her adored mom, grandma and aunts. Along with her loving heart, Dorothy’s sense of humor, command of vocabulary, memory and writing skills were razor-sharp, witty, unique, and true hallmarks of her personality. Stories of Dorothy’s hilarious antics and humor are the stuff of legends and one could truly write an entire book about that alone. As many of her generation did, Dorothy did not finish high school but went right to work at a young age at various jobs. She did, however get her GED later in life. She was truly a brilliant woman on so many levels-- read voraciously, did countless crossword puzzles, and wrote stories, poems, and limericks. She also worked at McNally’s Industries in Grantsburg for many years. She was a phenomenal golfer and in addition to being the only person in Grantsburg with a continuous membership at the golf club for fifty years, she had THREE holes in one! She held numerous offices in the Tuesday Grantsburg Women’s Golf Club and loved being the clubhouse manager for a number of years. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; 7 brothers and sisters; and grandson, Aaron Dahlberg. She is survived by her husband, Albert (Bud) Dahlberg; son, Timothy Dahlberg, and his children - Emily, Brett and Hans; son, Larry (Marilyn) Dahlberg, their daughter - Melanie (Craig) Weber with children - June and Vaughn; daughter, Wendy (Paul) Hendricks, their son - Jason (Jody) Hendricks with children - Jared, Jordynn and Taylor; their son - Michael (Suzanne) with daughters - Isabelle, Alyson and Lindsey, and son - Jake Helland; son, Daniel (Beverly) Dahlberg, his children - Sarah (Brian) Dunlavy, Nyssa (Rob) Leider, and Nathan and fiancé Angelique Edgerton; their daughter – Lucy; and Beverly’s children, Nicole and Benjamin Davis. Also surviving are a sister, Patricia Ernst; a brother, Tony (Julie) Finch; sister-in-law, Evone Finch; and many nieces and nephews, family and friends. The Funeral Service to celebrate Dorothy’s wonderful life will be conducted on Friday, August 29, 2014 at 11:00 am (visitation 9:30 to 11:00 am) at Faith Lutheran Church, 421 S. Russell St., Grantsburg, WI, with Pastor Sandy Hutchens officiating. A fellowship luncheon will follow. Arrangements have been entrusted to Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home, Grantsburg Chapel. Online condolences may be expressed at www.swedberg-taylor.com.
