After a courageous three year battle with cancer; Darren J. Lien, age 49, a resident of Grantsburg died April 28, 2013 surrounded by his family. Darren was born on April 1, 1964 in Grantsburg to Hector and Lucille Lien. On August 15, 1987 Darren and Lori were married at their church, Faith Lutheran in Grantsburg. To this union two children were born, Kelsey and Kassie. In 1984, Darren went to work for McNally Industries in Grantsburg. At McNally he held various positions in the company until he began his career as an Inspector in the Quality Department. Years later, her took a position at Ingenuity Industrial Machining in Mora, Minnesota as a Quality Assurance Manager where he has worked the past 22 years. Darren was an avid outdoorsmen, he enjoyed hunting deer, duck, birds and spent time fishing too. He looked forward to his yearly trips to North Dakota bird hunting with his dogs, friends and family. He liked to spend time outdoors camping, 4-wheeling, trips to Lake Superior and an occasional canoe trip on the St. Croix River. Darren kept up the family tradition of harvesting rice with his brother Duane and nephew Shane. Darren had an incredible passion for the game of hockey, he loved playing, watching games, and coaching several different teams. However, his true passion was coaching his daughters, which he did up until his illness ended his 26 years of coaching. He was preceded in death by his parents; Hector and Lucille. Darren is survived by his wife Lori; his daughters Kelsey and Kassie; brother Duane (Judy)Lien; sisters Diane Durand, Doreene (Tully) Lyman Rand and Donna (Sam) Wyss; his brother-in-law Ray (Cheri) Queener; along with aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 12:00 PM (visitation 10-12 noon) at Faith Lutheran Church in Grantsburg with Pastor Mark Hendrickson officiating. Music will be provided by Joe Lener, Linda Dahl and Jackie Maslow. Honorary pallbearers will be Shane Lien, Mike Rand, Tim Rand, Ray Queener, Robert Derrick, Kevin O’Brien and Jim Clark. Arrangements were entrusted to Swedberg-Taylor Family Funeral Home, Grantsburg Chapel.
