Charles “Sid” Briggs, age 91, of Danbury, passed away Wednesday evening, November 18, 2015. Sid was born November 28, 1923 in Jacksonville, FL, a son of the late Lucius C. and Leona M. (O’Herrin) Briggs. He moved with his family to Danbury during the great depression years. He received his elementary and middle school education from public schools in Jacksonville and Danbury, and he was a 1942 graduate of Webster High School. Sid served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from March 13, 1943, and was honorably discharged on January 12, 1946. He was assigned primarily with the 606th Coast Artillery Battery in Hawaii. Following his discharge, Sid returned to Danbury. Sid was employed for the U.S. Postal Service for many years, initially as a rural mail carrier and retired as the Postmaster for the Danbury Post Office. He previously had worked as a land surveyor for the state of Wisconsin, and for Taconite Engineering in Minnesota.. Sid loved being outdoors taking care of his property, tending his flowers gardens, making trails through the woods, and snowshoeing in the winter. He was a social person and enjoyed visiting with friends at the “Log Cabin.” Sid enjoyed reading and was very knowledgeable about current events, politics, and foreign affairs. Sid is preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Ralph Briggs, John Briggs, and James Briggs; and sisters: Agnes (Earl) Aronson and Dorothy (Eugene) Monteverde. He is survived by a sister, June Papanek; sister-in-law, Linda Briggs; and many nieces and nephews and their families. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, November 23, 2015, at Danbury Cemetery, with Pastor Eddie Crise officiating. Full military honors will conclude the service.
