Carole Dwight Lunsman, 76, Danbury, WI, passed away Friday, May 1, 2015. Carole was born March 5, 1939 in the town of Arna, Pine County, Minnesota, son of the late Norman and Dora (Holmes) Lunsman. Through his mother’s family, he was a direct descendant of the St. Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin, and maintained his tribal membership with the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians. Following high school, Carole was inducted into the U.S. Army on November 5, 1958. He was assigned primarily to the 623rdQuartermaster Company (AER&D) and honorably discharged February 18, 1962. On November 30, 1964, Carole married Marlene Dwyer in Minneapolis, MN. He was employed by Railways Express and then North Star Steel Company. After retirement he worked for the St. Croix tribe in Danbury, WI. Carole enjoyed hunting as well as fishing, including spearing and ice fishing. He received great pleasure going on nature hikes, driving through Crex Meadows, as well as gathering wild rice and all different kinds of berries. Carole loved studying about the history of the various native Nations and Tribes, and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others. He was deemed a “holder of rituals.” He had a great love for nature, and was considered a profound ecologist. He liked watching the wild animals and birds, and making maple syrup. Carole was also a cinematography buff and enjoyed watching films about nature, as well as westerns and war movies. He was a gregarious human being, definitely outgoing, friendly, amiable, and sociable, as well as flirtatious. Carole is survived by four children: Mar Dee (Jim) Hall, David (Denise) Lunsman, Michael Lunsman, and Ann Marie (Robert) Lunsman-Reading; grandchildren: Charles Lunsman, Casey Hall, Ryan Phernetton, Courtney Lunsman, Cheyenne Staples, Myles Hall, Joseph Phernetton, Savannah Staples, and Gisele Grace “Gigi” Reading. Also surviving are sisters, Bonita and Neva; brother, Jerry; half-brothers, Wesley and Dwayne; and nieces and nephews. A memorial service honoring the life of Carole Lunsman will be held at 6:30 pm, Thursday, May 14, 2015, at Siren United Methodist Church, 24025 First Ave., Siren, WI, with Pastor Gilbert White officiating.
