Bert (“Fudd”) Lund, Jr., age 78, from Siren, Wisconsin, lived a good life, fought a good fight, but due to complications from covid pneumonia, passed away on October 20, 2021, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota, surrounded by family.
Bert was born on June 13, 1943, to Bert Sr., and Myrtle (Gustafson) Lund at Frederic Hospital, the second of six siblings. He grew up in the village of Siren and attended Siren School. Bert was very active in high school, taking part in football, basketball, band, choir and many other activities. His junior year he was chosen to be the Homecoming king and Prom king. It was during his football years that he gained the nickname, ‘Fudd” which is how almost everyone knew him. He graduated with the class of 1961.
Bert enlisted in the Navy in the fall of 1961, along with several of his high school classmates. He trained as a hospital corpsman and was attached to a Marine division at Camp Pendelton, California. Eventually he transferred as an independent corpsman abroad the USS Sirius. He served his country until 1964.
After attending UW - Eau Claire for one semester, he transferred to UW – Superior, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in English (minor in Biology). He accepted a teaching position in Clear Lake, Wisconsin, and after one year was recruited by Glenn Shearman (Siren School superintendent) to teach English at SHS. Bert was head of the English department for 17 years. He went on to attend summer school and night classes at UW – Stout to be certified as a k -12 guidance counselor. Bert served as Director of Pupil Services for 12 years. One highlight of his counseling career involved working with the Native American liaison coordinators (Bev Oustigoff and Frenchie Decorah) in achieving the highest Native American student graduation rate in the state. Bert met his wife, Diane (Worell), while both were teaching in Siren, and they were married in 1977. To this union two sons were born, Darren and Nate. Bert retired from Siren School in 1998.
Community involvement was an integral part of Bert’s life. He served as District 13 supervisor on the Burnett County Board for 19 ½ years. He served over 20 years on the Siren Township Board, two years as chairman. He was an active member of the Siren Fire Department for 46 years, named Firefighter of the Year-2011 and served as secretary for several years. He has been a member of the Lund-Brown American Legion Post #132 for over 50 years and acted as liaison between the Legion and Siren School in the recruitment of candidates for leadership opportunities. He has been instrumental and the advocate for sending 57 SHS junior boys to Badger Boys State over the past 16 years. Bert has been a member of the Polk-Burnett Retired Educators Association since he retired and was co-chairman of the annual school supply/backpack initiative. He belonged to the Siren Community AG Association since its inception and helped to organize the annual dairy breakfast at local farms. He also aided in the dispersal of scholarships to students involved in AG activities. Bert was a member of the Landmark Masonic Lodge #244/Frederic, the 32nd Consistory/Eau Claire and Zuhrah Shrine/Minneapolis. He was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Siren for over 40 years. In May of 2021 Bert was the newest addition to the Wall of Honor at Siren School.
Bert will forever be remembered as Fudd, a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He loved hunting, fishing, cooking with his wife, reading western novels and writing poetry. One of his greatest joys was his granddaughter, Reese. He was a man of deep faith. Fudd was one of a kind.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents, Bert Sr. and Myrtle Lund.
Bert is survived by his wife of 43 blessed years, Diane; sons, Darren (Linnea) Lund and Nathan (Kayla) Lund; one granddaughter; brothers, Eugene Lund, Gary (Bev) Lund, Dale (Twyla) Lund, Bryon Lund; sister, Carol (Wally) Benson; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends he made over the years.
A private family burial will take place at the Spooner Veterans Cemetery.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2022 from 11:00 AM-2:00 PM with a short service at 11:00 AM at Crooked Lake Park in Siren.
