Avery Ethel Doornink, age 90, of Frederic, Wisconsin passed away January 19, 2017 at Traditions of Frederic. She is survived by her children, Diane (Jerome) Lehmberg, Darryl (Elna) Doornink; 6 grandchildren: Renna (Steve) Ellis, Rita (Andrew) Wheeler, Renee’ Donat, Kari (Christopher) Green, Scott (Natalie) Doornink and Chad (Jennifer) Doornink; 11 great-grandchildren: Chase and Noelle Doornink, Payton and Parker Jo Doornink, Carter Johnson, Caden Green, Madelyn Donat, Jordan and Jaden Fuda, Lucus and Logan Wheeler; along with other relatives and friends. Avery was born on August 17, 1926 in Spring Valley, Wisconsin to the late Harvey and Ellen Stark. She was raised in Martel, Wisconsin and attended Spring Valley School. As a kid she would visit the Erickson’s farm with her siblings and friends. After high school she moved to St. Paul, Minnesota and worked as a secretary for an insurance agency. It was one of those trips back home she met George Doornink. On March 11,1949, she was united in marriage to George Doornink. They both returned to St. Paul where they made their home. She continued to work until her daughter was born. Shortly after that, they moved back to Beldenville, Wisconsin where she raised their children. They moved back to South Minneapolis when George started working at Northwest Airlines and where she started working at Lutheran Deaconess Hospital until she retired 12 years later. After her retirement, she moved back to Martel, Wisconsin to live with her mother on the home place. Avery always enjoyed time with her family. She loved playing games and cards. She spent many hours doing needle point. She loved road trips, going to different places and visiting with people. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Avery was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents, Harvey and Ellen; her brother, Harlan (Marjorie) Stark; and her sister, Audrey (LaVerne) Gerholz; brother-in-law, Walter (Sue) Doornink; sisters-in-law: Alice (Bernard) Donkersgoed, Hannah (Henry) Landaal, Henriette (Dave) Coppers, and Celia (George) Kanis. A visitation will be held Monday, January 23, 2017 from 5-8 PM at Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home, Grantsburg. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 11:00 AM (visitation 10-11 AM) at Rush River Lutheran Church, N8623 Co. Rd. Y, River Falls, WI. Burial will follow at Baldwin Cemetery in Baldwin. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to be made in Avery’s name to the Dementia/Alzheimer’s fund.
