Arnold D. Wellnitz, age 86, a resident of Siren, WI passed away after a short illness with pneumonia on October 2, 2023 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Arnold was born on May 30, 1937 in Herman, Minnesota to Reinhold and Ella Wellnitz. He grew up on a dairy farm in Herman milking the cows in the morning and evening, tending to the pigs and chickens and planting and harvesting crops on their 320 acres with his father and siblings.
Arnold served in the United States Navy with his brother, Merton on the USS Goodrich traveling the Mediterranean and multiple countries during their tour together. Arnold was honorably discharged in 1958. Soon after his return home, he married the love of his life, Elvina.
Arnold worked for Whirlpool, Burlington Northern and the Milwaukee Railroad for 28 years before resigning and opening his own business, Intermodal Maintenance & Rebuild in 1986. He worked on the railroad with piggy packers with yards located in St. Paul, MN, Davenport, IA and Chicago, IL. Whether he trucked for them or the railroad directly he was there to make sure the job was complete. Arnold retired at the age of 64 from the railroad industry but continued to plant crops in Siren to feed the deer. If that wasn’t enough, you would find him mowing what he called his “golf course.” He not only loved farming, enjoyed building several family homes with his daughter, Jodie as his faithful assistant.
In his free time, Arnold enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, camping and the trucker in him loved a good road trip. Arnold was a member of the Siren VFW Post.
Arnold was a good, kindhearted, hardworking man blessed with a wonderful family and always said he had a “good life.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, Reinhold and Ella; siblings, Arvin, Merton, Ardell (twin sister), Roger,
Melvin and Russell; son in law, Thomas O’Brien and granddaughter, Tara O’Brien.
He will be forever missed by his wife of 65 years, Elvina; their four daughters, Rebecca (Don) Bouchier, Tammy O’Brien, Jodie Wellnitz and Sandy Wellnitz; grandchildren, Shawna, Chad (Hannah), Wade (Chasity), Nicole (James) and Shannon; great grandchildren, Cole, Payton (Justin), Josh, Elisa, Cole C., Wyatt and baby great granddaughter due in January; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Siren Lakeview Cemetery with Pastor Emily Stelling officiating.
